Last night I helped my new painter put water- based Kilz primer on a bathroom ceiling where new drywall had been hung. My hands were covered with Kilz primer and I can assure you Kilz does not wash off with warm soapy water as most water based paints will. Last night I scrubbed my hands with Brillo pads and that removed some of it but not all of it.

There has to be an easier way to remove Kilz from your hands. Only a seasoned rehabber will have the solution to this nagging problem. Are there any out there? --69.244.xx.xx

Try an automotive hand cleaner with pumice...Fast Orange and Gojo are two brands. If that doesn't work, try a small amount of turpentine/mineral spirits on a paper towel and wash it off right away the hand cleaner. Goof Off might be too strong, Goo Gone, an orange cleaner, might work. Or just be speckled Roy for a week and let it wear off. --69.47.xx.xxx

Hope you are doing well in the shack on stilts, we here in the north are keeping everything closed tight as the temps hover from zero to low teens, very low. --75.94.xxx.xxx

Virden,

This is a bathroom that got gutted down to the studs. Even the 2x10 floor joists under the toilet were reinforced. I decided NOT to paint the new plywood over the wall studs as I had pondered in a previous post. I glued those faux ceramic tile 4x8 wall panels above my shower surround instead.

Still have to paint that bathroom ceiling though where my electrician put his foot through. My new painter is good (I fired the last one for painting over electrical outlets) but he sure is slow as molasses in the wintertime. I want this project done by Saturday, so I have jumped in and started helping getting this job done.

Keep those paint removal tips coming in. Maybe we can get a consensus by the end of this day and surely I will have more paint on myself and clothes by then.

Hey CarolJ in CA: have you ever picked up a paint brush before? Just wondering. :) --69.244.xx.xx

I have a pumice stone (like you scrub your feet with) in the shower and after I've finished bathing, the paint or primer has softened and then I rub the pumice stone over my hands to remove it. I don't like using paint thinner or other chemicals or the smell they leave on my skin. --170.29.xx.x

Maybe nail polish remover. I think I have used that but mostly I waited until it just came off and wore my work related badges on my hands with honor.

I take a bath. By the time I get done soaking, the kilz on my hands will roll off. So I soak, let the tub out, then rub my hands under the running faucet and it will roll off. Mostly. ;) --50.82.xxx.xxx

WHH in NC,

Painting is not one of my strong points. Negotiating house deals and writing checks is what my mouth and hands do best. I try to hire everything out but there are certain jobs I end up doing myself.

With my 6.5 height and long arms, I am the only one on my crew who can paint an 8ft. ceiling without the use of a ladder or an extension pole. I guess I am good for something on rehab project. I am also good at changing light bulbs too.

I am leaving here with my checkbook in one hand and the cell phone in the other. Will be back here in about 8-10 hours. --69.244.xx.xx

How to remove: hire it!

(could not resist!)

Seriously: baby oil. Let it soak.

Best: baby oil and cover with rubber gloves. The longer it sits the easier the paint comes off.

Hand your hands will nice and soft for your lady friends!

Tip: baby oil or hand creme BEFORE painting, even on the face for rolling overhead or spraying.

Under the nails and in the cuticles: do the dishes, slowly. --67.175.xx.xxx

I've had good luck with peanut butter getting spray foam off. You can use butter, but the grit in the peanut butter helps.

Gloves? - it goes like this - "I'm just doing this little bit, I'll be careful and won't get any....ahh, da*m"

Mike A - I used Goof-Off (aerosol can type) this evening and it does work!!! That white primer peeled right off. I have clean hands but they smell like Goof-Off now. --69.244.xx.xx
